Heavy Rigid (HR) - TLILIC2016 Licence to drive a heavy rigid vehicle


With this licence you may drive any rigid vehicle with three or more axles, including bus or truck, greater than 8 tonnes GVM. Heavy Rigid licence holders may tow a single trailer (other than a semi trailer) that has a GVM not greater than 9 tonnes.

Who can get this licence?
To apply for this category you must have held an Australian car driver licence for at least 24 months.

Training
Drivers complete both a theoretical and practical training component, followed by a multiple choice knowledge test and practical test to assess driving and load restraint.  All drivers need to read The Victorian Bus & Truck Drivers’ Handbook (June 2021 edition), available from VicRoads or JADS Driver Training.

Drivers generally require 6-7 hours of training, prior to being competent to take the licence test or Final Competency Assessment (FCA).

Training and assessment usually occurs over two days.
